Early Child Screening is a check up on how your child is growing and developing.
All children in Minnesota must be screened before they start kindergarten.
Screening helps connect your family and child to community resources.

When your child is 3 years old:

Call McKinley Early Childhood Center to set-up your free screening appointment at 507-333-6460.

Appointments typically run about an hour, and both the child and parent need to be present.
Screening results are based on your child's chronological age. There is no pass or fail!

It is best to screen when a child turns three, but screening can also be done at age four or five.

Faribault Public School’s concern for children doesn’t begin in kindergarten and end at graduation. Our teachers are on hand to work with children who need additional developmental and educational help from birth through age 21. The program that is designed to meet the developmental needs of our youngest learners is the Early Childhood Special Education Program (ECSE).

Faribault Public Schools Early Intervention Program:

The Early Intervention program is part of District 656’s Special Education Services. It is a free program offered to families whose child, specifically those from 0 to 3 years old, is eligible and has qualified through our evaluation process. Team members could include an early childhood teacher, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, and/or a speech therapist.

Our Mission: The mission of the Faribault Early Intervention EQIP team is to develop and put into practice the skills that will empower and assist families in helping their children to grow and learn in the most meaningful ways in their natural environment.

EQIP or Evidence-based Quality Intervention Practices is an approach or strategy where the caregiver guides the visit; working within typical routines and interests of the child to enhance their child’s skills in order to make positive gains towards his/her outcomes. The early childhood team members are there to teach, guide, and coach families or caregivers to help support the development of the child in routine or everyday activities that the caregivers have identified as a need. This evidence based practice is part of ongoing research for providers to use to facilitate caregiver's interactions with their children that promote participation and engagement in their everyday routines. Children learn throughout their day as they experience their day such as getting dressed, mealtime, playtime, naps, bedtime or going to the store. Providers work with the caregivers to embed learning into these daily activities so that it occurs naturally and often.

Children develop in certain, predictable ways, referred to as developmental milestones. Milestones help you understand how your child develops, learns and grows. Visit Help Me Grow to learn more about developmental milestones or submit a referral to be contacted by a special education team member.

Preschool Intervention

Preschool Special Education is for children from age three until they begin kindergarten with developmental delays or other disabilities, and who are experiencing challenges in their learning and development.

Our program strives to help young children interact successfully with friends and family at home, in the community, and at school. To achieve this goal, the ECSE staff work as partners with the parents and teachers.

Faribault Public Schools provides a continuum of special education and related services depending on each student’s unique special education needs and the goals determined by the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Services are provided in the least restrictive environment which is appropriate for the individual student.

Our specialists can help you to determine the best services to meet your child’s individual needs. The earlier that needs are identified, the more progress can be made before the child enters kindergarten.
